About This Book
Ned is invited to a surprise party. Fortunately, a friend lends him an airplane. Unfortunately, the motor explodes. Fortunately, there's a parachute. Unfortunately, there's a hole in it...
Why This Age
The alternating fortunately/unfortunately structure teaches narrative tension and is a gateway to creative writing. 5-6 year olds can predict and extend the pattern.
How to Use
- Take turns: you say 'fortunately' and your child says 'unfortunately'
- Create your own fortunately/unfortunately story together
- Notice how the color pages (fortunately) alternate with black-and-white (unfortunately)
